Indonesia Signals the Start of Its 100 GW Solar Initiative: A Major Milestone for ASEAN's Energy Transition

Indonesia has officially announced the launch of its ambitious 100 GW Solar Initiative, marking a significant milestone in the country's clean energy transition. According to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, the government will soon hold the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the project, signaling the official start of this landmark national solar program.
The initiative aims to accelerate large-scale solar power deployment, transform Indonesia's energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and strengthen both energy security and decarbonization efforts.
Project Highlights
80 GW of Distributed Solar + Battery Energy Storage Systems (Solar + BESS)
• Covering approximately 80,000 villages
• Around 1 MW solar microgrid equipped with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for each village
• Replacing diesel generation and improving electricity access in remote areas
20 GW of Utility-Scale Solar Power Plants
• Development of large-scale ground-mounted solar PV projects
• Providing reliable and clean electricity to the national grid
Energy Storage Will Be a Key Enabler
In addition to expanding solar generation, Indonesia plans to deploy Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) on a large scale to enhance renewable energy integration, improve grid stability and reliability, and support the large-scale deployment of clean energy.
Through this initiative, Indonesia also aims to:
- Establish a domestic solar manufacturing industry
- Accelerate the development of battery and energy storage industries
- Attract domestic and international investment
- Create new employment opportunities
- Strengthen national energy independence
