Data Centers Are Becoming a Key Driver of Solar and Energy Storage Growth in Southeast Asia
Date:2026-06-22
Recently, Malaysia announced a high-profile renewable energy cooperation project. Data center operator DayOne signed an agreement with TNB Renewables and TNB Power Generation to support the construction of approximately 1.5 GWp of solar power projects and a 2.2 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The project will encompass both ground-mounted and floating solar power plants and will be implemented through the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) in Malaysia.
Why is this agreement noteworthy?
With the rapid expansion of AI, cloud computing, and hyperscale data centers in Asia, electricity demand is growing at an unprecedented rate. For data center operators, securing a long-term, stable supply of renewable energy is not only fulfilling ESG commitments but also a key strategic factor for ensuring future business development.
DayOne plans to achieve 100% renewable energy power supply by 2030 and significantly reduce carbon emissions. This also reflects the growing trend of technology companies deeply integrating sustainability goals with their energy procurement strategies.
What Does This Mean for Southeast Asia?
This agreement sends a very clear market signal:
AI and data center development → Increased demand for green electricity procurement → Accelerated implementation of PV and energy storage projects
With countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam actively attracting investment in data centers and digital infrastructure, the regional market's demand for:
- Solar PV
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Grid upgrades and smart grids
- Corporate Green Electricity Procurement (Corporate PPA)
is expected to continue to grow in the coming years.
Energy transition and the digital economy are deeply integrating, and data centers may become a new engine driving the development of the Southeast Asian new energy market.
With the rapid development of the Southeast Asian new energy market, the importance of industry exchange and international cooperation is constantly increasing.
We sincerely invite industry professionals from the PV, energy storage, power, grid, EPC, project developers, and data center sectors to gather in Bangkok, Thailand, to explore development opportunities in the Southeast Asian new energy market.
