Japanese engineering filtration company Yamashin Filter Co., Ltd. has partnered with Shinshu University to advance the research, development, and commercialization of bio-based nanofiber thermal insulation materials.
Against a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical instability and continued volatility in global oil prices, industries dependent on petroleum-derived materials are facing increasing pressure from rising costs and supply chain uncertainty. As a result, material innovation is increasingly being driven by the need for strategic resilience rather than optional sustainability.
The collaboration focuses on the development of bio-based aerogel and nanofiber composite insulation materials designed to achieve lightweight structures, high thermal insulation performance, and additional functionalities such as sound absorption and humidity regulation.
According to the research team, nanofiber-based materials have already been successfully commercialized in textile filling applications, achieving comparable thermal performance at approximately one-tenth of the thickness of conventional materials, demonstrating a clear pathway toward industrial scalability.
From a cost perspective, the company indicates that its proprietary mass-production processes enable the new materials to remain cost-competitive even when utilizing bio-based raw materials.
On May 26, 2026, both parties announced progress on their joint project titled “Next-Generation Nanofiber Functional Materials for Social Implementation and Commercialization,” with a target of large-scale societal application by around 2030. The initiative marks a strategic transition for Yamashin Filter from a filtration-focused company to a broader advanced functional materials platform.
This development reflects a broader global shift away from petroleum dependency toward supply chain resilience and energy-driven material innovation, positioning bio-based materials as a key enabler of next-generation industrial applications.
