Southeast Asia's Battery Storage Market: Regulation Holds the Key to Growth

Date:2026-10-19

A joint report by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights that regulatory uncertainty and market barriers, rather than technology limitations, remain major obstacles to battery energy storage deployment across Southeast Asia.

The report projects that ASEAN's variable renewable energy capacity could grow from 53.7 GW in 2024 to approximately 231 GW by 2030, increasing the need for flexible power systems and energy storage solutions.

However, unclear regulations, grid connection delays, high investment costs and uncertain revenue models continue to challenge market development. Clearer policies, improved market mechanisms and stronger energy storage standards will be essential to unlocking the region's potential.

ASEE 2027 | Connecting ASEAN's Energy Markets
