PTTEP, the exploration and production arm of Thailand’s national energy group PTT, has warned that every USD 3 increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices could raise electricity prices in Thailand by approximately 5%.
Natural gas remains one of Thailand’s primary sources of power generation. More than one-quarter of the gas used for electricity generation is imported, with part of the country’s LNG supply purchased from the spot market. This leaves Thailand vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in global energy prices.
PTTEP also noted that without significant changes to the country’s energy mix, LNG could play an increasingly important role in Thailand’s power sector over the next decade. Balancing energy security with affordable electricity is therefore becoming a major priority for the Thai energy market.
This trend could encourage commercial and industrial users to pay greater attention to distributed energy, energy storage systems, energy management, efficiency upgrades, and high-efficiency cooling equipment. Energy-intensive facilities—including industrial parks, data centers, commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, and large factories—could become important application markets for these technologies and solutions.
For energy and industrial associations, electricity price volatility may also create greater demand for policy dialogue, energy-efficiency standards, technical training, and business matchmaking among member companies.
