EV Policy Shift in Thailand: From Import to Local Assembly – Powering the Next Energy Storage Boom

Date:2026-01-30

As Thailand’s EV3.0 policy expires, the new EV3.5 framework has officially reduced subsidies to 50,000 baht—and only for locally assembled EVs.

At the same time, the excise tax on imported EVs has risen sharply from 2% to 10%, effectively ending the era of low-cost imports.

This policy shift is accelerating a major transformation:

From importing to local assembly
Surging demand for domestic battery supply chains
Urgent need for local energy storage and charging infrastructure

With imported EVs losing incentives and becoming significantly more expensive, automakers are now under pressure to localize production—driving rapid growth in Thailand’s battery manufacturing, BESS deployment, and energy storage ecosystems.

Why This Matters for the Clean Energy & Storage Industry

Local assembly requires secure, scalable battery supply
EV growth increases demand for grid-scale and charging-station energy storage
Energy storage becomes a strategic asset for Thailand’s EV transition and energy security
Strong alignment with ESG goals and decarbonization pathways
